Our Open Source Environment
We’ve created a full suite of hardware, software and services for IoT
Most of our hardware is proprietary and protected as such, however most of our firmware is open source and available under a GPLV.3 Licence.
This licence type enables developers to download our source code and make contributions – all in the spirit of open source.
What you will read with our Firmware is the following
This program is copyright © Pycom Limited, a company registered in England and Wales under number 09852962 (Pycom) and/or its licensors.
”This program is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation, either version 3 of the License, or (at your option) any later version (GPLv3+), plus the additional terms set out in the following section.
Where this program is conveyed with hardware lawfully supplied under the Pycom brand, and is provided unmodified from a version available at pycom.io/downloads, the requirement to provide the complete set of notices set out in this document embedded into the device is waived, provided that the program in conjunction with the hardware retains an accessible standard http, https, ssh or telnet interface, and the following text is displayed upon first connection of each session to such interface:
This software is copyright © 2020 Pycom, Damien P. George, Espressif Systems and others. It is provided WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranties of MERCHANTABILITY, SATISFACTORY QUALITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
WHAT DOES GPLV3 MEAN?
We’re completely flexible in the way we go about delivering firmware.
If you use our open source firmware under GPLV3 with genuine Pycom hardware you can do exactly as you please. The License to do so is included when you buy our hardware.
If you want to use the open source firmware with a 3rd party or homemade piece of hardware then it either needs to continue to be open source (and there are certain other requirements that need to be adhered to) i.e. you cannot close source it, or you can contact us to obtain a license for use of the firmware that you want to close source.
Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to discuss options.
